SOPA
I know I’m a little late to the game here but I’d like to tell a story. There once was a country that outlawed alcohol. It was for the good of the people they said. But the people wanted to drink. So rather than just doing what they had always done, they broke the law. There was violence and immense resources were spent enforcing a law most people didn’t want. The country realized that they couldn’t stop it, so they repealed what came to be known as Prohibition.
If that wasn’t blunt enough, let’s put it this way. You will never stop online piracy. They have always and will always find a way. This is a money pit that does more harm than good, and if it passes one of two things will happen.
A. This whole thing goes belly up, Prohibition style. We lose YouTube and a ton of other sites, you make a lot of people mad, and the whole thing is repealed in a few years. Not a single thing will be gained, and people will look back on it as a mistake. You will also be pissing all over the liberties we supposedly have.
B. This whole thing leads to a firewall to rival China’s. Freedom of speech becomes nonexistent for US citizens on the internet, and all those unwashed masses who’ve been grumbling about the power structure and occupying Wall Street have another thing to make them really fucking angry. Some of these people, shall we say, these anonymous people, are pretty good with computers and have been known to cause some serious damage. Food for thought.
Passing this bill benefits no one. Let’s not tie our tax money up in something that will be impossible to enforce, restrict our freedom and, this is the big one, nobody wants.
